THE PRINT

“I'm not an abstractionist. I'm not interested in the relationship of colour or form or anything else. I'm interested only in expressing basic human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, doom, and so on.” - Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko moved through several artistic styles in his career before arriving at his signature colour focussed style in 1950. A prominent figure in the New York school (also known as Abstract Expressionism), Rothko used abstract means to express emotions as rectangular fields of colour. Painted in 1958 at the height of his artistic achievements, Mark Rothko’s No. 10 represents the pinnacle of his alchemical prowess. Using the most basic of artistic materials - canvas, oil and pigment - Rothko is able to create a painting that appears to glow with a supernatural luminescence, the result of a surface that fizzles with painterly energy.

In No. 10, the richness and sheer variety of Rothko’s colour is most evident in the thin sliver of painterly activity that occurs towards in the centre of the canvas. Here, in this intensively worked area, the artist reveals an extraordinary array of subtle, almost indistinguishable passages of reds, yellows, pinks, umbers and ochers that constantly shift under the human gaze. The tension that exists on the surface of this and many other Rothko paintings was the result of his long and deliberate process. Across the expansive surface of the canvas, Rothko stages a multiplicity of events where hues are assimilated and contrasted; textures opposed and blended. Its optical effects elicit an emotional response that resonates with Rothko's ambition to create a total experience for the viewer.

In 1978, the Guggenheim Museum organised a major retrospective, Mark Rothko 1903-1970. This gallery quality giclee art print reproduction of an advertising poster promoting the exhibition has been produced on luxurious heavyweight textured art paper using archival inks that won't fade over time resulting in a superior print with pin-sharp detail, rich vivid colours and unparalleled durability.

THE ARTIST

One of the preeminent artists of his generation, Mark Rothko is closely identified with the New York school, a circle of painters that emerged during the 1940s as a new collective voice in American art. During a career that spanned five decades, he created a new and impassioned form of abstract painting. Rothko's work is characterised by rigorous attention to formal elements such as colour, shape, balance, depth, composition, and scale.  By 1949 Rothko had introduced a compositional format that he would continue to develop throughout his career. Composed of several vertically aligned rectangular forms set within a coloured field, Rothko's "image" lent itself to a remarkable diversity of appearances. In these works, large scale, open structure, and thin layers of color combine to convey the impression of a shallow pictorial space. Colour, for which Rothko's work is perhaps most celebrated, here attains an unprecedented luminosity. His classic paintings of the 1950s are characterised by expanding dimensions and an increasingly simplified use of form, brilliant hues, and broad, thin washes of colour. In his large, floating rectangles of colour, which seem to engulf the spectator, he explored with a rare mastery of nuance the expressive potential of colour contrasts and modulations.
