The Great Wave off Kanagawa is a woodblock print created by renowned Japanese artist Hokusai in 1831. It is one of the worlds most recognisable and revered artworks. The composition of The Great Wave is a synthesis of traditional Japanese prints and use of graphical perspective developed in Europe, and earned him immediate success in Japan and later in Europe, where Hokusai's art inspired works by the Impressionists.
The preeminence of this artwork can be attributed in part to its sheer graphic beauty, and to the compelling force of the contrast between the wave and the mountain. A monster wave with seemingly animate clawlike tentacles rears up menacingly seemingly destined to come crashing down on three narrow boats and their crew of crouched oarsmen. The clawlike structure of the enormous wave conjures up images of mythical dragons and other dangerous beasts. The drama of the print is enhanced by the placement of Mt Fuji in the hollow of the wave's angry crest. Like the helpless boats, Mt Fuji too appears on the verge of obliteration. Bubbles of foaming spray cascade down from the crest of the wave, adding to the visual excitement created by the wave-tentacles.
