Pop Motif was born from the simple belief that furnishing your home with stylish gallery quality art shouldn’t have to break the bank. We're here for those who appreciate art and value quality, but can't justify splashing out on original gallery pieces, yet refuse to settle for flimsy posters and mass-produced frames. We bridge that gap by offering gallery quality art without the gallery price tag.
The Search for Something Better
It started with a first home and a lot of empty white walls. When my wife and I purchased our first home back in 2012, we did what most new homeowners do: we went looking for some statement artworks that reflected our style to help make our house feel like a home.
This was easier said than done. It felt like we had to choose between either expensive gallery pieces that we just couldn’t justify (given a rather large new mortgage and a first baby on the way!) or flimsy posters and cheap mass-produced homeware store frames.
Then one of my wife's friends put us on to a couple of new online art marketplaces that looked promising. They offered a huge selection of artworks from talented independent artists from around the globe that could be delivered to your door ready to hang. "Amazing," I thought. "Problem solved."
Disposable Decor
Unfortunately, when the artworks arrived, I quickly learned that there was a big gap between the promise and the reality. The prints were produced on flimsy poster paper and the colours were way overly saturated. The frames were so brittle it felt like a small miracle they’d survived the journey intact. To make things worse, they came with cheap perspex instead of glass which was already starting to warp. It felt like disposable decor and there was no way they were going up on our walls.
Doing it Right, Here in NZ
Still, the concept stuck with me. It was such a great idea, if only it had been executed well. I was pretty sure there must be others facing the same issue: Where can I get stylish, unique, gallery-quality art without breaking the bank?
Eventually, I decided I would do it myself, do it right, and do it here in New Zealand. Pop Motif went live in 2014. In contrast to what I had experienced as a customer, I wanted to produce art that arrived looking even better than it did on screen. I am proud to say that this is the very thing our customers most often comment on when reviewing our art.
It’s hard to believe it’s now been over a decade since I turned that initial frustration into a business. In that time, we’ve delivered over 60,000 artworks and helped more than 30,000 customers elevate their homes through art. We’ve also become the go-to art supplier for New Zealand’s leading interior designers and helped many independent artists from around the globe turn their passion into a sustainable career.
