Banksy’s iconic 2011 work Forgive Us Our Trespassing was not designed for the street but like the ephemeral light of stained glass windows it was intended for mass public consumption. Illuminated glass frequently adorned the inside of Gothic churches in medieval Europe and was the original moving image media. The images portrayed a Biblical narrative in coloured glass that came alive with the addition of the rays of the sun. For Forgive Us Our Trespassing Banksy enlisted the help of a state school in Los Angeles asking the students to scrawl their own unique tags, designs, and messages on a series of glass panels placed in their school playground. The result was a swirling mix of communication and commemoration.
